Welcoming a newborn into your life can feel overwhelming. It can sometimes also feel like quite a lonely experience and during winter the shorter days, unpredictable weather, and postnatal exhaustion can make everything seem that bit tougher.

Don’t forget that at this time of year the days are getting lighter, the sun is setting later every day. Today the sun will set at 4:31pm and in just six weeks it will set 5:46pm. Brighter and warmer days are coming.

On this week’s blog we’ve got some brilliant tips for helping to cope with life with a newborn during the winter months.

Get as Much Natural Light as Possible

Daylight hours are limited during UK winters, so making the most of natural light can significantly boost your mood and will help your baby to develop their circadian rhythm. Try to:

  • Open your curtains as soon as you wake up.
  • Spend time near windows during the day.
  • Get outside when you can, even if it’s just a short walk with the buggy—fresh air and daylight can do wonders for your energy and mental health.

Maintain a Gentle Routine

Newborn life can feel chaotic and newborns don’t need feeding and sleeping routines, but establishing a simple daily rhythm can be comforting for both you and your baby. It can be hard to find the energy to do anything when you’re sleep deprived and it’s cold and dark outside but consider setting small achievable goals each day.

To Combat Feelings of Isolation

The combination of winter weather and newborn life can feel isolating, so prioritising connection is important:

  • Arrange virtual coffee chats with friends or family if getting out is difficult.
  • Join local baby groups or postnatal support classes to meet other new parents who will be in the same boat as you.
  • Don’t hesitate to reach out for support if you’re feeling low—talk to your midwife, health visitor, or GP.

Prioritise Rest and Self-Care

Winter can be draining, and sleep deprivation only makes it harder. To care for yourself:

  • Nap/rest when you can, even if it’s just a 20-minute rest while your baby sleeps. The washing can wait!
  • Keep nutritious snacks and easy meals on hand to maintain your energy.
  • Give yourself grace—these early months are about survival and connection with your baby, not perfection.

Make the Most of Indoor Activities

When going out isn’t appealing, find ways to enjoy staying in:

  • Have skin-to-skin cuddles with your baby, which can be comforting for both of you.
  • Listen to audiobooks, podcasts, or calming music to feel connected to the outside world.
  • Light candles or use soft fairy lights to create a cosy, uplifting environment.
  • Having a bath with your little one is a lovely activity for them and special bonding opportunity for you both.

Remember, Brighter Days are Coming!

The winter months with a newborn can feel long, but seasons change. As the days gradually get longer, you’ll find new energy and opportunities to explore the world with your baby. For now, take things one day at a time, be kind to yourself, and know that brighter days are ahead.

Just know you’re doing an amazing job, and this season—however challenging—will pass.
