Hi Ashley, Tell us about yourself.

Hi I’m Ashley and although I was born a Womble (in Wimbledon) and have also lived in the US and Ireland, I’m now in Elmbridge, Surrey where I grew up – hence why I started Daisy First Aid Elmbridge covering Walton on Thames, Cobham, Weybridge, Esher, Woking, Stoke D’Abernon, Leatherhead, West Horsley, Leatherhead areas.
I originally trained as a Montessori Directress and have had many roles in childcare prior to becoming self-employed.

What is your typical working day like?

I’m not sure there is a typical day or week being a Daisy trainer! For me that was part of the attraction, variety! I would say my days can involve creating/publishing social media posts- which I try to make engaging and useful as I also call on my years of Early Years work to give parenting advice & support.

If I have a parent class or professional course to run, then I will always try to help everyone feel relaxed as soon as possible as I know that’s how they learn better and I’ve been very humbled to get some great feedback about how I train people which is fab. As I’m out and about I try to drop off flyers where appropriate so more people get to hear about the learning opportunity and build relationships with local businesses and the community as people learning first aid can benefit EVERYONE – you never know who you can help or when!

Who would be your dream person to train?

In general – anyone willing to learn this valuable life skill, so anyone from children upwards! One thing I try to get across to people is that our classes aren’t just for people who are expecting or just had a baby; First Aid is relevant to all ages at any stage of life.

I know there are plenty of well-known people that live in my area, so I would love to teach someone who tries to use their status in a positive way to encourage positive attitudes as that’s what first aid is all about – empowerment and boosting confidence. If she ever came over here from the US – Ellen De Generes – fabulous role model for people for the reasons I mentioned.

What is the question you get asked the most in classes?

What if I’m by myself? Honestly speaking, shout for help, if no one comes, call 999/112 & keep them on the phone – they’re trained and used to dealing with stressful situations, most of US aren’t. You can ask them any questions if you’re unsure of what to do and they can ask you questions about the situation to get a better picture before someone arrives to help you.

What was the last real life first incident you had to deal with?

As I’ve been childcare qualified for many years before transferring to first aid training, I’ve had plenty of chance to practise my first aid qualifications over the years. I’m pleased to say that in each instance, the information and skills kicked in – even with the serious situations like having to give CPR on a beach in Egypt.

What are some of the things you tell parents?

I remind them that being a parent can be tiring, stressful and frustrating at times though it’s also a privilege not granted to others that would love to have children, so be thankful and cherish those lovely times and make the most of the time together as you won’t get it back. I also remind parents that if you can look yourself in the mirror and say you did the best you could for someone in THAT situation with the information/skills/tools you had at the time, then that’s all that matters.

What is your first aid top tip?

Treat a person how you would like to be treated if the situation was reversed. Kindness is free but it can make a big difference. People underestimate the TLC part of First Aid – it’s still as valid as the techniques and knowledge.

When you are not at work what do you enjoy doing?

I also run a home fragrance business – which is wick free – so no risk of burns!

Reading, dancing, theatre, travel- typical Thursday’s child, I always like to challenge myself to know more and be the best version of myself I can.
