Top tips for keeping cool!
There seem to be two temperatures in this country: cold or boiling hot!
Summer has appeared out of nowhere and we’ve been plunged into a heat wave with no time to acclimatise! It’s fair to say most of us are struggling a bit with this sudden rise in temperature but if you’re pregnant you’re probably struggling more than most. Especially if you’re not yet on mat leave and are having to go about your usual daily business whilst pregnant in a heat wave.
So, on this week’s blog we thought we’d give you our top tips for keeping cool in a heat wave when you’re pregnant.
Rise in body temperature
It’s completely normal for your body temperature to rise when you’re pregnant due to an increase in blood volume. You may feel uncomfortable during a heat wave but there is no danger to you or your baby providing you feel well and stay hydrated.

Here are our top tips for keeping cool in a heat wave when you’re pregnant.
Cool your pulse points
A great way to get some instant relief is to cool your pulse points by putting cold water them. Your pulse points are:
- the back of your neck
- behind your elbows and knees
- the inside of your wrists
- the top of your feet
- the insides of your ankles
- your inner thighs
- your temples
DIY air con
Putting a bowl of ice in front of a fan will blow cool air around the room and feel like you have air con in your home!
Get a paddling pool
There’s no need to wait for your little one to arrive to get your hands on a paddling pool! Why not fill one up and get in it now to cool yourself down – an accompanying ice-cold mocktail will make the whole experience even better!
And the bonus is that you’ve got it ready for when your little one to splash around in next summer!
Spray bottle
Get yourself a spray bottle, fill it with cold water and give yourself a spritz every time you feel too warm. This is a great one for the commute.
Frozen fruit snacks
Frozen berries a great snack to keep in the freezer. They’re a healthy way to keep cool in this weather!
Open your loft hatch
To cool your house down on hot days open the loft hatch so the hot air can rise up to the loft and keep the bedrooms a little cooler.
Close your curtains
Keep curtains closed during the day will also help to keep the house cool on hot sunny days.
Prevent dehydration
It’s very important to stay hydrated in this weather especially if you sweat a lot. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water (at least 8 glasses a day is recommended).
If you feel dizzy or light-headed, have a headache, feel excessively tired, have a dry mouth, lips or eyes and are passing small amounts of urine infrequently (fewer than three or four times a day) you need to drink more fluid. If these symptoms persist or worsen please seek advice from a medical professional.
